Dhopkins1 261x300 #6 DeAndre Hopkins, WR, ClemsonHGT: 6-1          WGT: 200

YR: Jr            POS: WR

Notables:

  • School career records 4.8 rec/game & 62.1 rec yards/game in his career
  • 2011: 72 rec for 978 yards 5 TDs

 Pros:

  • Decent size
  • Has great balance
  • Very effective on the outside in the mid and long range passing game
  • Seems to get the release he desires
  • Good hands
  • Makes hard grabs
  • Routes aren’t great but competent enough to suffice on the next level
  • Natural ball skills and instincts
  • Very quick when going in and out of breaks
  • Great leaping ability

Cons:

  • Needs to learn to use his body more when trying to get into position
  • Doesn’t use his hands effectively when he should to get open
  • Needs to be more physical in all facets of the game
  • Would like to see him separate from coverage more often
  • Doesn’t show the desire or ability to sustain blocks

Thoughts:

While watching Hopkins you have to admire his ability to make plays in the passing game. I don’t see great acceleration or separation out of Hopkins when he is playing against competent corners but it is adequate. When a DB can get their hands on Hopkins it causes him problems. I would like to see Hopkins add a little bit more weight to deter this problem. Hopkins knows how to get open and if the ball is in his vicinity he will make the grab whether he is covered or not. The thing I love about Hopkins is that he is already very hard for DBs to defend and I believe he still has plenty of room to get better. He is a great alternative to teammate Sammy Watkins at Clemson, which I believe he could be the same to some NFL wideouts.
